The English Restaurant is a snug, dark wood-pannelled restaurant in a 1600s townhouse, serving classic British dishes all day. The restaurant offers private dining and a bar, and prides itself on its authentic, ambitious, occasionally masterly English cooking, with a particular focus on fish, seafood, and game. The restaurant is avowedly Francophile and serves mainly French wines by the bottle and glass. The business began trading as The Market Coffee House in 2001 and has since been renamed The English Restaurant. The building itself dates back to 1670, with the oldest part listed for its raised and fielded panelling on the first floor, now used as a private dining room for parties of up to sixteen people. The restaurant also offers a range of splendid desserts and sources the very best ingredients for its products, including free-range eggs, real drinking chocolate, and fresh, local English food.
