Over time, the area became increasingly commercialized, with businesses such as breweries, ironmongers, and printers occupying the buildings. By the 19th century, the area had become notorious as a slum. In the late 20th century, the area was declared a Conservation Area, leading to restoration and regeneration efforts. The reconstruction of the Sundial Pillar symbolizes the area's revitalization.
