Established in 1830, the RNLI Walmer Lifeboat Station saw significant developments in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, including the establishment of an actual lifeboat station in 1856 and the addition of a motor lifeboat in 1930. During World War II, the station played a crucial role in rescue operations, with Coxswain Joseph Mercer being awarded a Bronze Medal for rescuing 13 men. Following the war, the station transitioned to focus on inshore lifeboat operations, with the retirement of the last all-weather lifeboat in 1990. The station continues to save lives at sea and has received over 25 awards for gallantry. Visitors are welcome to tour the station and learn about the crew's heroic efforts.
