Operation Wallacea

The expeditions result in a large number of publications in peer-reviewed journals each year, and have led to the discovery of 30 vertebrate species new to science and the rediscovery of 4 'extinct' species. Additionally, Opwall has leveraged $2 million from funding agencies to set up best practice management examples at the study sites. The unique aspect of Operation Wallacea is the concentration of large teams of university academics, who are specialists in various aspects of biodiversity or social and economic studies, at the target study sites. This allows volunteers to work on a range of projects and contributes to the production of large temporal and spatial biodiversity and socio-economic data sets. This information is used to organize effective conservation management programmes.
