Business Description

The Chester Roman Amphitheatre is the largest so far uncovered in Britain, dating from the 1st century. Managed by English Heritage, the site is designated as a Grade I listed building and a scheduled monument. The ruins currently exposed are those of a large stone amphitheatre, used for entertainment and military training by the 20th Legion. Excavations since 1999 have shown that the wooden grillage is the base of the seating. The amphitheatre was used for cock fighting, bull baiting, combat sports, and gladiatorial combat. Visitors can enjoy free entry to the ruins and witness military re-enactments in the summer.
