Chawton House Library is a 400-year-old manor house inherited by Edward Austen from his childless relatives, Thomas and Catherine Knight. It was a familiar place for Jane Austen, and now serves as a treasure trove of Austen and Knight family heirlooms as well as a collection of early women's writing. Visitors can step back in time and explore the house and its walled garden, and discover the inspiring stories of early women writers. Extensive restoration work was carried out from 1996 to 2003.
