The Jesuits in Britain Archives is the repository of the history and activities of the Society of Jesus in Britain. Founded in 1540 by Ignatius of Loyola and nine companions, the Society now numbers just under 20,000 men and is present in more than 100 countries. The head of the Order is the Superior General, Fr Arturo Sosa, based in Rome, and the head of the Order in Britain is the Provincial, Fr Dermot Preston. In Britain, the Jesuits are involved in a variety of works, including running schools, parishes, centres of spirituality, university colleges, university chaplaincies, and volunteering missions. They are also engaged in international Jesuit organizations such as the Jesuit Refugee Service and Jesuit Missions. The Jesuits in Britain are involved in a wide range of activities, including parish priests, spiritual directors, writers, teachers, actors, lawyers, doctors, sculptors, and astronomers.
