Arbroath Abbey, founded in 1178 by King William the Lion, is currently undergoing high-level conservation works, with the Abbey and grounds closed to visitors. However, the Visitor Centre and new exhibition are open, with advance booking required. Visitors can read the Declaration of Arbroath, where Scotland's nobility proclaimed their independence from England in 1320, or experience the sacristy, which has one of the longest echoes in the country. Last entry is at 3.30pm.
